Chicken Mis-Adventures and Sailor Dreams - Part 2

Sailing, sailing,
Over the bounding main,
For many a stormy wind shall blow
Ere Alice and Joanie B. come home again!

Laurenjoan: In Part 1 of our (mis)adventures in New York City--Alice and Joanie B. set sail (walked from the subway station) to their cabin bunks at The Jane Hotel, former home to sailors lost in the city between ships...

Take a time warp-step into The Jane Hotel, 113 Jane Street, New York, NY. ..adjacent to the Hudson River, the Meatpacking District and walking distance to Chelsea, Soho, and Union Square....

The Jane: Our Bunk Bed Cabins, at a cozy 50 sq. ft., can accommodate 2 travelers... Please note: All Bunk Bed Cabins share the communal bathrooms located at the end of the hall on each floor.

(uh-oh) Joanie B. thought..shared bathrooms, bunkbeds...and...

...Monkeys and peacocks and mooseheads - oh my!

Laurenjoan: Alice and Joanie B should have checked on the internet for reviews of The Jane Hotel, like this one: "When they say shared bath, they mean shared with a multitude.

or this review of the bunk rooms

"... so I knew our bunk room would be tiny...There is barely room to turn around."

Laurenjoan: Oh well, I guess some chickens have to learn by the school of hard sqawks. Let's see how they deal with The Jane Hotel situation...

Alice: Did you see all those stiff animals in the lobby - the moosehead? the monkey? and the peacock? What kind of place is this?

Joanie B. pecked the elevator button for the 4th floor. The door slammed shut. Ding, ding, ding - swoosh. The girls came out onto a narrow dark alley-like hallway.

Joanie B: 431 - this is it?

Joanie B. stepped into the room and Alice bumped into her.

Alice: Move over Joanie B. - I'm barely in.

Joanie B: I can't - this is as far as I can go.

Her face was smashed against the window. She wiggled around and hopped onto the bottom bunk.

Joanie B: I'm boss so I get the bottom bunk.

Alice jumped from her suitcast to the bunk ladder, then up to the top bunk. She immediately pecked the buttons on the air-conditioning unit - and got blasted by - warm air.

Alice: Its hot up here and I need to go to the little hens' room.

Alice made her way up the dark alley, I mean hallway, by feeling her way there. Once she got to the bathroom, it looked kinda cute - and there was a sweet view from the window of the Hudson River.

Alice looked out the window, felt the (slightly) cool breezed coming through, then turned around and saw --

.... a MAN  ? !

Whaawk? Alice said to herself and blushed, feeling very uncomfortable. She had only ever shared a coop with other hens. The bathroom had strange men (and women) coming now in multitudes, there were stiff animals in the lobby - as Alice remembered they were near the Meatpacking district - and their coop was teeny tiny and hot.

Alice realized that she was now a nervous wreck of a chicken! How was she going to appear as a professional blogger of Chicken Fashion Nation at the Independent Fashion Bloggers conference?!?!

Alice flapped, hopped, flew back to Room 431 and burst into the (teeny, tiny) room.

Alice: Braaawwk! We need to get out of here. I need my privacy. I need space to turn around in. I need air! We're too cooped up in this coop! We gotta get outta here!

Joanie B. was lounging on her bunk (the bottom, one of course). There was a bit of cool-ish air flowing. She was pecking on her Ipad.

Joanie B: I'll search on Kayaakkkkk..

Laurenjoan: Several hours and countless searches later - she found a real hotel with a real private bath for a really good price (for New York City) - the Hotel Pennsylvania...uh oh...maybe she should have taken a look at Yahoo's Trip Advisor before she booked the room at the Hotel Translvania - I mean Hotel Pennsylvania...

End of Part 2 --

Laurenjoan: Alice and Joanie B.'s Sailor dreams are over...turn in next time for the continuing (mis)adventures that await them as they make their professional chicken blogger debute...In the meantime, if you ever travel to New York City, you might want to check out these books and websites before you make a hotel reservation:

Alice: I remember the cool places we'd meet up with our kind - chickens in SoHo - across from 72 Spring Street (big coop of Marc Jacobs)  - at Pylones ... "Founded in France in 1985, Pylones (pronounced pea-lone), delights consumers everywhere with thoughtful designs and innovative twists on everyday objects."

Joanie B:  Vanilla Buttercream....
Alice:  Chook Chook Chocolate Buttercream...then roosting at Bleecker Street Park...having our cake and eating too...ahhhh.

Chicken Misadventures and Sailor Dreams

Ahhh the adventure and romance of fashion in New York City that was ahead for two chicks of Chicken Fashion Nation blogging...

Laurenjoan:  Alice and Joanie B. got lucky on their flight to NYC - they had a free middle seat between them! So when they arrived in the Bawk Apple for the Independent Fashion Bloggers (ifb) Conference, they thought they were on easy street....oh, silly chickens!

Alice the ChickenAlice: We're on a baawk - budget.  No taxi rides, Joanie B, it's the subway fo us.  Let's take the A train -- just $2.25 to Manhattan.

New York Subway - the A train Joanie B: Rrrawk! The Jane Hotel on Jane Street awaits!

Laurenjoan: Alice and Joanie B. forgot it was Saturday - a slooooow train day....and a looong time later - the A train pulled up to 14th Street Station on 8th Avenue.

Joanie B: There's an elevator - hold the door!

Alice:  Hold your beak, you mean - whooo weeee, it stinks in here.

Laurenjoan:  Someone should have warned them about subway elevators and what some people use them for....

Joanie B: What you have to put up with if you don't want to lug your suitcase up the stairs.

Laurenjoan: Alice and Joanie B. blinked at the bright sunlight when they hopped out of the elevator.
Alice: Yowww - humid and hot - my feathers are starting to curl. (Alice looked at her smart phone) 89 degrees in New York City! Omgoodness...
Joanie B: Let's cross the road.
Alice: Why do we have to cross the road?
Joanie  B: to get to the other side - where it's shady - brawk!  Now..ahoy - there's Horatio Street ...turn right next street on to... JANE -
Alice: I see the Hudson River..and 113 Jane Street ahead...thar she blows - the Hotel Jane!  Our coop away from coop...

The Jane Hotel was once upon a time a home for sailors lost in the city between sailing jobs - the ASFSS -

The American Seaman's Friend Society Sailors' Home and Institute was built from 1906-'08 and was designed by William Alciphron Boring, the architect behind the immigration station at Ellis Island. The ASFSS Home was where the survivors of the Titanic stayed in 1912...

Joanie B: woooo, it looks like a giant lighthouse..

The girls dragged their suitcases up the stairs - bump, bump, bumpity, bump! no elevator in the outside rigging.  As they pushed their way into the lobby, suddenly they were squawking back in time and pecking at a Bellhop - who did not look happy..yikes...
(End of Part 1)
Laurenjoan:  Alice and Joanie B. had finally made it to New York and - finally - to their coop away from coop - The Jane Hotel...where Titanic survivors stayed...but would Alice and Joanie B. survive to tell about it?  Click in next time to find out - in the meantime - you might want to try these amazing resources for more information:

Chickens on the Run: Bookmobiling it to the Food Truck Stop in Milpitas

Once upon a time four Chickens set out on a new adventure on the Book! Book! Mobile

Alice (front) and Joanie B. (back)

Alice, Joanie B., Fluffy and Nugget...

Fluffy the Chicken

 Nugget the Chicken

took a ride on the Book! Book! Mobile to the Food Truck Stop in Milpitas at the Big Lots Parking Lot.  A couple of dancing librarians, Amytha and Laurenjoan, came along too.  Little did they know what was in store for them....

It was a hot August afternoon, Wednesday, August 15 --

Our first stop: The BIG COOP - Santa Clara Library District Headquarters, home to the Bookmobile.

Alice, Joanie B. and Laurenjoan had their Library Outreach Survival Kit ready with storytime flyers, bookmarks, mood pencils, and some more exciting library handouts as they went in search of their cohorts - Amytha, Fluffy and Nugget - sitting broody in the nest, deep inside the HQ Coop.

Joanie B:  BAWK! Fluffy! Nugget! did you get the big, blue tablecloth for displaying our handouts (and the Santa Clara County Library name)?
Fluffy and Nugget shrugged their wings and pecked at Amytha.

Amytha: OUCH! Yes, I got the tablecloth and the table too.  Come on, let's go!

 Amytha, Queen of the Bookmobile!

Amytha was sooo excited to drive the Bookmobile...

...to the Food Trucks in Milpitas,

Food Trucks in Milpitas - YUM!

 ...especially the -
That's Sweet! Dessert and Cupcake Truck:

Fluffy's favorite cupcake: Frenchtoast & Bacon.
Nugget's: Chocolate.

Alice and Joanie B. are watching their girlish figures - so they shared a Maple Chocolate Bacon.

Once the cupcake crumbs were pecked up, the girls got ready:

Joanie B: Ready to reach-out with outreach? Handouts, Fluffy?

Fluffy: Handouts, check!

Joanie B: Big, blue tablecloth, Nugget?

Nugget: Big, blue tablecloth - Chick! I mean - check!

Joanie B: Mood pencils ready for free give away, Alice?

Alice picked up  a blue mood pencil with her beak.  It changed to the color white!

Alice: Mmmphaa...

Alice spit the pencil out of her mouth.

Alice: Mood pencils--- ready!

Joanie B: Bookmobile ready? books ready? library cards ready, Amytha and Laurenjoan?

Amytha: Check, check,

Laurenjoan: check!

All the chicks:  Woo HOOOO! We're ready ---

The DJ was revving up the music - some good 80s stuff bouncin' out the speakers...

Amytha with Don Phillips
...when Don Phillips, Teen Librarian at Milpitas Library, stopped by to check out the Bookmobile and eat some dinner.

Bookmobile - ready for Outreach!
The handouts were looking pretty on the big, blue tablecloth.

Then - Alice, Joanie B, Fluffy and Nugget couldn't believe their eyes!
Joanie B:  Amytha and Laurenjoan stop dancing to the DJ's music.  BAWK!!!  Look busy, like you're workin' -   here comes one of the Big Bosses -

Derek Wolfgram - fork in HAND!
OMGoodness - it's Derek Wolfgram, DEPUTY County Librarian.

He had stopped at the Cupcake Truck and was headed their way....

Just in the nick -  a patron walked up with a reference question - phew! The girls were saved from embarrassment...this time.

Happily, Derek was well fed, even though he missed out on the bacon cupcakes (sold out). He was in a very good mood when he picked up his mood pencil -- whoa -- look at those colors!

As the sun began to set, Alice, Joanie B., Fluffy and Nugget hopped into the Bookmobile - time to roost for the night.
Nugget:  That was sure fun!

Joanie B, Alice, and Fluffy clucked in happy agreement.
